Gautam Mahale

I’m an undergraduate at IIT Bombay, and most of what I do comes down to getting a machine to notice something and then act on it.

On the institute’s Mars rover team, where I lead the software subsystem, that means looking at ground nobody has driven on before and deciding where to put the wheels. Last summer at Saturn Labs it meant reconstructing a person in three dimensions from cameras strapped to somebody else’s head. Right now it mostly means finding out how much of a language model’s attention you can throw away before it stops being able to find the thing you asked it for.

Enough of this goes wrong in interesting ways that I started writing it down. That is what this site is — the writing, and the drawing I do when I am not doing the rest of it.
